Now that the major part of our “Season” is over, we can return to some sort of normality!
The number of rounds we have been able to put through the course, and resultant additional revenues achieved, have been great. Many of our regular “Swallows” returned yet again and contributed well to our Club’s success.
The lack of any significant rain also resulted in no loss of rounds due to weather, and enabled us to maximise the number of rounds played. This led to extremely good income over the period which will stand the Club in good stead again this year.
The rounds below are the annual totals
Rounds Comparison Dec to Feb (last year)
April Dec Jan Feb
Members 2833 2950 2989
(last year) 2704 2906 3170
Visitors 2857 2694 2750

In an endeavor to accommodate our all-important Members, we had two tee starts on Thursdays and Saturdays, and opened the booking system to members enabling them to book well in advance (through to the end of March) affording the opportunity for all to secure tee times of choice. Overall this system has all worked well for members and visitors alike.
There were however some detractors who believe that we should either block times during the day as “members only times”, or who believe that we should simply increase our subscriptions so as not to have to rely on visitors. Notwithstanding these opinions, there is little doubt that the Club, and by association, its members, have significantly benefitted from a very successful season.
Our Van Loveren Club Championships were held on the 25th and 26th February and attracted a record field of 102 entrants, and our new “Championship” tees were used for the first time by A Division contestants. A minority of participants expressed displeasure at this changed format, but the event turned out to be a great success.
We once again express our grateful appreciation to Wynand Retief and Van Loveren for their fantastic sponsorship and support for this, our Clubs premiere event.
Again congratulations to the winners (Men’s Club Champs 2017):
- Club Champion
- A Division …. Lukas Steyn
- B Division …. John Bluett
- C division …. Robbie Weddell
- Seniors …. Andy Forbes
The severe drought conditions have without doubt been very trying on our course. Weeven had a period where we were only able to water tees and greens! Notwithstanding this I believe that the course has stood up well in the circumstances.
Given the number of rounds that we had through the course, and the dry condition, I really think our Greenkeeping staff are to be commended for their maintenance of the facility.
New projects to be commenced in the near future include:
- We have commenced with the erection of a new practice net to offer players the opportunity to warm up before their round.
- We will shortly be commencing with the removal of all the dead trees around the course. (We are fortunate to have found a contractor who will do this for free as long as he can take the wood!)
- It is still our intention to add two new “Club” tees, one at the 12th and one at the 16th.
We will be hosting the first South African Senior Professional Open and Pro-Am Tournament at our Club from the 3rd to the 7th April this year. It is indeed a privilege to have had our Club selected to host this event. Members are invited to participate by helping out with duties such as marshals, scorers etc. Lists are on the notice board if you are able to assist during that time. There are also opportunities for members to play in the event. If you need any details in this regard, please contact Greg Phillips.
We look forward to settling back into our regular routines as the “Swallows” start their long journey back home!
